When you state a trade would u be specific as to whether it is a day trade or an intraday trade or a few days? or longer? Also when talking about an earnings play could u say when earnings for the issue is?

What if you're not sure when you buy whether it will be a one day hold or a 3 month hold?

What if you're not sure when you buy whether it will be a one day hold or a 3 month hold? Shouldn't one know whether one intends to trade a stock over a short or long time before purchasing the stock? My opinion has been that one should avoid converting a short term trade into investments ...

Depends on the situation of course, and in any event a few months wouldn't really qualify as an investment.
