Brosin I am confused here. I am probably just being early morning stupid but what does proceeds mean? For example at the top of this page it says Short sell 3000 TZA @ $56.15 8/10/11 9:28 am CT
proceeds $168K
I take proceeds to mean profit. And on a short sell a profit is when you cover. The language is confusing me. Help?

Short sell 3000 TZA @ $47.75
8/14/11 12:18 pm CT
cost $143K
Then on this one it says the same.. That you short sell TZA but this time it says cost.
I cannot tell when you are taking profit and when you are buying selling or shorting....etc.

Hi Maxi - good question. The 2nd one that says "cost" is in error and should say proceeds.
Cost = buying Proceeds = selling
Cost - Proceeds = profit
If it is a short sell, you are receiving proceeds to open the position. To close a short, you need to buy (would show 'cost'). If you are buying, it costs you money to open a position.
So other than if it is a short, 'proceeds' implies opening position and 'cost' implies closing
But much easier, if it is closing a position, I always put the profit/loss for that portion of the position.. so it will show that in the parenthesis. For example:
That +$6000 in parenthesis was a profit/loss. If there is no parenthesis, it means it is opening the position and not closing it
