From www.optionmonster.com .................GLTA Indexes rise before housing data todayLarge and small-cap indexes rose yesterday after Apple's dividend announcement and in anticipation of positive housing data this morning. AAPL closed above the elusive $600 level at $601.10, up 2.65 percent on the day. Shares of the SPDR Homebuilders Trust (XHB) also finished higher, up 0.14 percent to $21.54, as investors defended support at $21.30. The S&P 500 remained firm over the 1400 level, trading as high as 1414 before profit-taking commenced the last hour. It closed at 1409.75, up 0.4 percent, moving up support and resistance levels. The SPX strength was bolstered by gains in the energy and steel sectors, specifically shares of U.S. Steel. (See related story.) Weakness in the Treasury bond market also was a potential catalyst for the indexes, as the 30-year future fell 0.73 percent. The Nasdaq 100 moved higher with the help of gains in Google, as well as Apple. The NDX advanced 0.75 percent to close at 2733.26, a 10-year high. The Russell 2000 saw the largest percentage gains of the session, rising 0.91 percent to a new 2012 high of 837.77. Previous resistance was 832.78 was taken out early in the session. S&P 500 Resistance is now 1410, followed by 1414 (high for yesterday and for 2012). Support is now 1405.71, followed by 1400 and then 1398. Nasdaq 100 Resistance is now 27238.22 (yesterday's high), followed by 1340. Support is now 2728, followed by 2720 and then 2710.41 (yesterday's low). Russell 2000 Resistance is now 840, followed by 843.25 (yesterday's high) and 845. Support is now 835.51, followed by 831.64 and then 830.

From www.optionmonster.com ...................GLTA VIX futures drop as volatility index gainsThe CBOE Volatility Index finished the day at 15.04, with the S&P 500 up more than 5 points to close just shy of 1410. The VIX futures, however, were all significantly lower. The volatility index pushed higher throughout the afternoon after bottoming around 14.60, finishing the day up 3.94 percent to 15.04. The VIX futures held steady in that time after dropping sharply all morning. The March VIX futures have only one trading day before they must settle with the spot index reading and finished the session down 4 percent to 15.50. The April futures were down 7.4 percent to 20.00. May futures were down 3 percent to 22.70, but the premiums in the futures remained large and the contango steep. Today saw two other developments in the volatility realm. The VelocityShares Daily 2X VIX Short-Term Note (TVIX) continues to build a premium to its Net Asset Value, as seen in its relationship to the similar the ProShares Trust Ultra VIX Short Fund (UVXY). The UVXY was down almost 13 percent on the back of those VIX futures, off which it is based, but TVIX was up 1.3 percent. The other development yesterday was the release of options on the UVXY fund.
